SHE DRINKS BEER: OUR REGULAR NIGHT AT THE PUB FOR WOMEN WHO ENJOY BEER

2024 dates: 9th January, 6th February, 5th March, 9th April, 7th May, 4th June, 2nd July, 6th August, 3rd September, 1st October, 5th November, 3rd December

At The Good Measure, Chandos Road, Redland, Bristol BS6 6PE (Jan, March, May, July, Sept, Nov)
And at the Kings Head, 60 Victoria Street, Bristol BS1 6DE (Feb, April, June, Aug, Oct, Dec)

In November 2021 Kelly set up She Drinks Beer at our award-winning north Bristol pub The Good Measure. Since then we have welcomed women* who enjoy beer to the pub one Tuesday every month, as well as running summer ‘taproom editions’ at the brewery through 2022.

‘Openness, accessibility and inclusiveness’ have been core values of GCB since Bob and Kelly set up the brewery in 2015. One way we strive for this is Kelly’s visible and vocal championing and celebrating of women working in the beer and brewing industries, and women who enjoy beer.

She Drinks Beer isn’t an organisation, it’s not political or asking you to join anything. It’s just about getting together with your friends in the pub, preferably to drink beer (though you don’t even have to do that if you’d prefer something else!), and disrupting that traditionally male space. Because being in a pub with mostly other women doesn’t happen very often, and we think that’s worth highlighting.

You’re welcome to come with friends or your partner, come on your own to meet others who enjoy beer, or come on your own and stay on your own – it’s entirely up to you and everyone is welcome regardless. If you’re not sure it’s for you, do please pop along anyway and see for yourself – we’re a friendly bunch!

(*everyone is always welcome at SDB, we are inclusive of all including non-binary, transgender, gender non-conforming)

Here’s what Bristol 24/7 wrote about it when She Drinks Beer first started.

**BIG NEWS** All Welcome open brewday is back to celebrate SDB’s third anniversary!

To mark three years of community, disruption and nights at the pub we’d love you to join us for a brewday with a difference!

On Saturday 21st September come down to GCHQ in awesome East Bristol to see how our beers are brewed, get hands-on with the process – and also hear from amazing, inspiring women in a range of fields.

Lining up for the day alongside the brew are:

Dr Pam Lock talking about and sharing a tasting on how women drank beer in Victorian times
Spirited owner Katy introducing Women’s+ Whisky Night with a tasting
Brewing Director George Young from Bath Ales/St Austell sharing resources from the Institute of Brewing & Distilling for getting into the brewing industry
An introduction to CAMRA BAD Ladies (Bristol And District!)
Bristol Feminist Book Club – the book we’ll be discussing is Lessons In Chemistry (of course!) by Bonnie Garmus (and you don’t need to have read the book to join in!)
Your chance to make your own mug – and find out about their courses – with MAKE studio from Bedminster
Delicious food from entrepreneurs supported by Ashley Community & Housing (ACH)

AND the taproom will be open for everyone from 2pm till 8pm!
With Esme Betamax spinning records by women

We’ll kick off around 10am with mashing in and go through the brewing process talking about and tasting ingredients used, then head into the afternoon with our special guests and finish with a beer at the taproom – please feel free to invite anyone to join us from 2pm.

If you’d like to join us for this very special day, please head over HERE to answer a few short questions to help us with numbers. If you have any questions drop us an email to shedrinksbeer@goodchemistrybrewing.com. And when you’ve signed up I’ll be in touch with more details nearer the time.

And the beer we’ll be brewing together? ALL WELCOME is our She Drinks Beer anniversary beer, an easy-drinking, super-accessible 4.4% pale ale with American and New Zealand hops. This hoppy, hazy little number is packed with big flavours and aromas of lime, grapefruit and tropical fruit.

If you’ve not tried previous iterations, you’re in for a treat – we LOVE this beer and are really excited to brew it again – with you! Sign up for the brewday HERE now.

Read how we celebrated International Women’s Day at SDB in March 2022 here.

In November 2022 we celebrated a year of SDB with the launch of our anniversary beer, All Welcome, brewed with women from across the Bristol hospitality and beer scene (read about it here). In October 2023 we re-brewed All Welcome with yet more local beer-loving women – that’s here (and it launches at November’s SDB at The Good Measure!).

As part of Women On Tap Festival, we ran a special one-off Wednesday SDB at our city centre pub the Kings Head, on 24th May 2023. More info here!

June’s SDB was part of Bristol Craft Beer Festival & We Are Beer’s fringe events! See some of our past event posters below.

SHE DRINKS BEER FAQS

CAN I BRING MY FRIEND / PARTNER / COLLEAGUE?
Yes, please do! We know walking into a pub full of strangers can be daunting, so if it helps you pluck up the courage to come along – brilliant! Equally, if you don’t have any beer-drinking women friends or colleagues, we’re a welcoming bunch 🙂 And of course, if you’d like to come with someone who isn’t a ‘she’, everyone is always welcome at The Good Measure, the Kings Head and our Taproom. SDB is mostly definitely not ‘ladies night’ or women only. (we are inclusive of all, including non-binary, transgender and gender non-conforming)

WHEN, WHERE AND WHAT TIME?
It’s
usually the 1st (or sometimes the 2nd) Tuesday of the month. Dates for 2024 at the top of the page, so you’ll always know when the next one is. The Good Measure is on Chandos Road in Redland, BS6 6PE. Kings Head is on Victoria Street in the city centre, BS1 6DE.
Kelly and Lorin are usually there from 6ish but feel free to arrive whenever is best for you –
the pubs open at 4pm. Laura is usually behind the bar, so do let her know you’ve come for SDB.

WILL THERE BE FOOD?
No, sorry. But you’re welcome to get a delivery or pick up something from the chippie on Chandos Road or anywhere local to the Kings Head.
