LATEST UPDATE – 02/08/2020

AUGUST!

It’s one of our favourite months of the year – not only would we usually be preparing for East Bristol Brewery Trail over the bank holiday weekend, but it would also be London Craft Beer Festival, CAMRA’s Great British Beer Festival, the balloon fiesta at Ashton Court, and of course our birthday! We’d been starting to think about a big party for 2020, as it’s five years since we got the keys for our unit on William Street, but of course like everything we’ve had to put a hold on that.

We’ve been planning out how we will safely open the brewery for take-away, like The Good Measure is currently doing. Up on Chandos Road we’ve got 1L bottles of draught beer, mini-kegs of Kokomo, fancy bottles of beer and cider in the fridge, and we’re still doing our weekly pre-order collections of mini-kegs and Bag In Box up there too.

While we’re not really sure how we can safely open for drink-in at The Good Measure just yet, we thought that might be something that could work at GCHQ, supplementary to take-away sales.

However, the main focus of take-away at the brewery was meant to be cans, and disappointingly we were informed last week of another delay to our canning line (that we originally spoke about in this blog). This is only the second run of this machine that the manufacturer, based in East Sussex, has produced. So they’re working hard to iron out the kinks that are presenting themselves in the first machine they made BEFORE sending ours up to us in Bristol.

While this is incredibly frustrating as we have everything else ready to go – including you thirsty lot, as we know from hearing from you! –  it’s definitely for the best. We wouldn’t want to have the canning line in situ and throwing up unexpected problems.

We are excited to show you a little tease of what’s on its way, though, to get you all salivating! Of course Kokomo is going to be one of the very first beers we can, and we have some exciting new beers and a few familiar favourites lined up right behind it! Keep your eyes peeled!

Cans of beer

As mentioned, August has always been when we’ve celebrated our birthday. Bob and I (Kelly) first got the keys for our big old warehouse, now of course lovingly dubbed ‘GCHQ’, in August 2015 and have enjoyed welcoming you all for a party every anniversary since. Unfortunately, despite it being a pretty big milestone in 2020, we won’t be able to do the same this year.

Our first brewday in 2015, after months of hard physical work getting the space ready, was in November. We want to brew something special to celebrate five years then, when we’re hopefully on more of an even keel and can put it into can too. Again – watch this space!

In the meantime, our Kokomo mini-kegs and three Bag In Boxes (Time Lapse bitter, Storms Pass brown ale and hoppy pale ale Common Thread) continue to be available every week on our website, so you can get delicious Good Chemistry beer freshly packaged and tasting great from us here. We offer free collection from GCHQ or The Good Measure, and a home delivery service too. The Good Measure is also open for take-away, details here: https://www.thegoodmeasure.co.uk/

Thanks for your support through these difficult times. Without you all backing local independent businesses, we wouldn’t have the brilliantly vibrant and diverse food and drink scene that we do in this city. Please continue to do all you can to support Bristol’s small businesses.

Cheers,

Kelly & Bob
