Tuesday 8th March sees our fifth monthly instalment of SHE DRINKS BEER at The Good Measure, and I’m delighted that this is also International Women’s Day! Started way back in 1911, IWD is an annual global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. For women in the brewing industry it’s a chance to get together at collaboration brewdays across the world and share knowledge, laughs and of course a few beers, while creating a beer to the annual theme.

SHE DRINKS BEER – International Women’s Day Edition
We have a great evening lined up to celebrate women in beer and brewing. We’ll have a full bar of beers brewed by women, and from women-owned breweries like Good Chemistry, and I’ll also be joined by a few local women brewers and brewery owners across the night who will be giving out free tasters of their beer and be available for a chat.
How we got here
As I’m not a brewer, and we don’t currently have any women on the brewfloor here, I’ve never felt comfortable with organising a collaboration brewday at GCHQ. But in the years leading up to Covid we have run great events, both at the brewery and The Good Measure, including an amazing cake and beer pairing afternoon with Bristol CAMRA Ladies! One of the last events we held at TGM before being forced to shut was the IWD Women In Beer evening in March 2020.
In November I (Kelly) launched SHE DRINKS BEER at our Redland pub, The Good Measure. We bill it as “a regular evening at the pub for women who enjoy beer”, and it’s something I’ve been wanting to start up for a long time. Having just been through two years of the most difficult trading circumstances it’s been exciting to have something to start planning for and looking forward to.

SHE DRINKS BEER isn’t an organisation, it’s not political or asking you to join anything – it’s just a night at the pub with other women and people identifying as women. You’re welcome to come with friends, or come on your own to meet other women who enjoy beer, or come on your own and stay on your own – it’s entirely up to you, and you’re welcome regardless. If you’re not sure it’s for you, do please pop along anyway and see for yourself – we’re a welcoming bunch!
(And if you can’t make 8th March, the next date is 5th April and we run monthly – keep an eye out for future dates!)
